Take Action

Dear Peace Activists,

On Tuesday, April 6, President Obama released the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which is a process that decides the role of nuclear weapons in the U.S. security plan. Obama’s plan is a step forward from President Bush’s, which extended U.S. nuclear weapon targets beyond Russia, China, Libya, and Syria to the “axis of evil” also known as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq. It even extended to non-nuclear countries that abide by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Obama’s NPR specifically exempts those countries, and includes promises of no first use and no new U.S. nukes.

President Obama’s call for a nuclear free world last year in Prague was essentially rhetoric. His recently signed new START agreement with Russia leaves 1500 nukes actively pointed at each side - enough to cause a nuclear winter twenty times over. Obama’s NPR allows for the construction of new nuclear warheads, and he has just approved $15 billion in increased government funding for the U.S. nuclear-weapons complex.

The NPR is rooted in outdated Cold War philosophies contradictory to the very idea of a nuclear-free world. The only practical way to get to that goal is through an international agreement on total nuclear abolition. This is what Peace Action is asking for. Only by making any and all nuclear weapons illegal, and strongly enforcing that ban, can we realistically address the growing threat of nukes falling into terrorist hands

Now is the time to let your voice be heard! Write letters to Obama demanding that he initiate steps now, in our lifetime. In just five minutes, you can affect change that will benefit future generations, as well as your own.

Thanks for all you do.

WATER WARS: BEYOND THE BLUE REVOLUTION
A lunch discussion with Alun Anderson and Steven Solomon, moderated by David A. Andelman.
The world's great conflicts of the future will revolve around what is now and will increasingly become the most valuable and vital commodity to the preservation and sustainability of life on earth - not oil or gas, neither gold nor diamonds, but water. From the arid reaches of the Middle East to African rivers being dammed by a generation of ill-considered moves by larcenous potentates to the rapidly melting Arctic icecap, the Winter 2009/2010 issue of World Policy Journal  examines the most critical issues confronting the ecologists and statesmen assembled just three months ago in Copenhagen, including the one most likely to be ignored: what lies beyond the blue revolution? This lunch discussion brings together Alun Anderson, author of After the Ice:  Life, Death and Geopolitics in the New Arctic and "Water Wars" contributor, and Steven Solomon, author of WATER: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power and Civilization.  World Policy Journal Editor David A. Andelman will moderate.   Admission:  Free for WPI Members.  Non-members receive free admission with the purchase of a subscription to World Policy Journal. Payment and RSVP: WPI Members:  RSVP to events@worldpolicy.org or 212.481.5005, Option 2.
