Dear Peace Activists and Friends,

This week our State Senators will vote on S.6279. If passed, this simple bill would amend the private housing finance law to give all veterans priority for housing through the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program.

The Mitchell-Lama Housing Program is a form of housing subsidy in New York State that provides affordable rental and cooperative housing to moderate and middle-income families. The program currently has 97 cooperative developments in New York City with more than 4,600 units. The bill won't cost either the state or the taxpayers anything. The bill simply increases veterans' standing within the program, not the program itself.

Currently, only those veterans that served in the armed forces between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 are given priority, excluding those who served in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. If the United States insists on sending men and women into war, the least we can do is make sure that these men and women are taken care of once they return home. Passage of this bill would be a step to providing veterans the respect they deserve.

It is not everyday that State Senators receive pressure from their constituents to vote a certain way on a bill. Each e-mail they receive will go a long way to affecting change right here in New York.

Help make New York a veteran-friendly state! E-mail your state senators and urge them to vote YES on S. 6279 to support affordable housing for all veterans in New York State.

Peace,

Linda McSorley

AFGHANISTAN UPDATE BY DAVID WILDMAN
Join us for a conference call briefing by David Wildman, Executive Secretary for Human Rights & Racial Justice at the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church and co-author of the new book Ending the US War in Afghanistan: A Primer. David has just returned from Afghanistan. He will give an update on the humanitarian situation - especially in Badakshan in the north where there are almost no Taliban activities yet some of the poorest communities who get hardly any aid; realities facing women in rural villages where no Taliban are present (they are confined to home and hardly seen because it's conservative society). He will also reflect on President Karzai's recent visit to DC; he managed using words only to get everything he wanted and US had previously refused. David will also speak about hard targets and soft targets of the Taliban in the leadup to the Kandahar offensive. We will then open the call for people's questions and comments. Questions sent in advance to ufpjafghanistan@gmail.com will be asked first. The briefing is sponsored by the UFPJ Afghanistan Working Group. Please forward this notice to those interested. If you are planning to attend, please email Cole Harrison or call 617-466-9274 (rings home & cell) so that a rough count can be obtained in advance.
