John H. Brown, who joined the U.S. diplomatic corps in 1981
and served in London, Prague, Krakow, Kiev, Belgrade and Moscow,
became the second diplomat to resign in protest over President Bush's
war against Iraq. Brown said in a letter to Secretary of State Colin
Powell made available to the media on March 12: "I cannot in good
conscience support President Bush's war plans against Iraq ."
John Brady Kiesling, a career diplomat who has served in United
States embassies from Tel Aviv to Casablanca to Yerevan, informed
Secretary of State Colin Powell in late April that, "I am resigning
because I have tried and failed to reconcile my conscience with
my ability to represent the current U.S. Administration." Here
is the text of Mr. Kiesling's letter of resignation. Unitl March
7 he serves as the political counselor at the United States Embassy
in Athens.
