Star Wars is a Multi-Billion Dollar Lemon
Star Wars Doesn't Work
U.S. taxpayers have sunk over $70 billion into Star Wars since
President Reagan first floated the idea in the early 80s and we
have nothing to show for it. Most of the early missile defense concepts
have been scrapped and the most recent version of missile shield
technology has failed more tests than it has passed.
Most experts agree that any nation possessing the ability to develop
a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of striking the United
States could also easily develop counter-measures (read: "decoys")
that would foil our most advance missile defenses. That's why 50
Nobel Prize winning scientists signed a letter stating that President
Bush's Star Wars scheme would "offer little protection and
do grave harm to the nation's national security interests."
Star Wars Wastes Taxpayer Dollars
The most frequent justification for spending billions on Star Wars
is the possibility that a "rogue nation" will launch a
nuclear missile at the United States. North Korea or Iran are cited
as the most likely nuclear threats to the United States. However,
neither North Korea nor Iran nor Libya currently possess missiles
capable of striking the United States. Even if one of these nations
did possess missiles capable of hitting our shores would they suddenly
decide to commit national suicide by launching one?
Star Wars Drives the Arms Race
The biggest missile threat to the United States remains Russia's
massive nuclear arsenal. If the United States insists on testing
and deploying a missile defense system, Russia, and China, will
respond by modernizing and expanding their nuclear arsenals. Both
the Russian and Chinese governments have repeatedly stated that
they will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that they
retain the ability to overpower U.S. defenses - whether they work
or not. If China begins building up its nuclear arsenal, India,
and then Pakistan, will certainly follow suit.
Instead of leading the world down the path to nuclear abolition,
President Bush, with his quixotic desire for Star Wars, is condemning
future generations to a world riddled with nuclear weapons and the
dangers they entail.
Star Wars Doesn't Address the Real Threats to the United States
While the Pentagon and the White House have been fixated on missile
trajectories America's enemies have been practicing the art of terror
with box cutters. The
most likely way a terrorist would choose to deliver a nuclear or
chemical weapon to our shores would be via a boat or truck loaded
with explosives. As we learned the hard way on September 11th,
Star Wars does nothing to protect Americans from the very real threats
that we face. Worse, the money we continue to waste on Star Wars
is money that we could be putting to good use on education, the
environment, beefing up security around our ports, social security...
the list goes on.
