Casualties
Mount,
Peace-loving People Respond
Hundreds of Iraqi civilians have died in the first two weeks of
war and countless more
have been injured. The Pentagon has now released the names of seven
US military personnel killed in action announced that up to 70 U.S.
troops are missing in action. Overall, the U.S. and British militaries
have lost at least one hundred service members in the war.
Despite widespread opposition,
Iraq's capitulation on the subject of weapons inspectors, it's destruction
of missiles, and lack of hard evidence demonstrating Iraqi possession
of chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons, the Bush administration
launch this unprovoked war and is even considering the
use of nuclear weapons against Iraq.
Activists are staging protests,
vigils, and direct actions across the nation in response to
Bush's pre-emptive war. In New York City more than 100,000 people
marched down Broadway during a
rally for peace on Saturday March 22nd.
Tell
Your Senators
to "Stop this War"
Last fall, New York Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton
gave President Bush carte blanche to wage war against Iraq. Now,
responding to increasing public opposition
to this ill-conceived military strike, Senator Clinton said on March
3rd that she preferred a peaceful resolution to the situation. Urge
Senator Clinton to sign onto new
Senate legislation designed to thwart Bush's rush to war.
American Diplomat
Resigns Over Bush Doctrine
John
Brady Kiesling, a seasoned U.S. diplomat currently serving as political
counsel at the U.S. Embassy in Greece has submitted his resignation
over President Bush's proposed war with Iraq. The counselor told
Secretary of State Colin Powell in
a letter submitted this week that the United States is, "straining
beyond its limits an international system we built with such toil
and treasure, a web of laws, treaties, organizations, and shared
values that sets limits on our foes far more effectively than it
ever constrained America's ability to defend its interests.
The World Says No To War
The February 15 demonstration against Bush's war on Iraq has widely
been considered a watershed event. Millions of people in over 600
cities around the globe took part in this
international call for a peaceful resolution in Iraq

Former President Carter
Slams Bush's Proposed War on Iraq
President Carter, this year's recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize
has come out forcefully against the new Bush doctrine of pre-emptive
strikes against other nations. The United States, Carter asserts,
"Formerly admired almost universally as the preeminent champion
of human rights... has become the foremost target of respected international
organizations concerned about these basic principles of democratic
life." Read the rest

"I don't believe America will justifiably make an unprovoked
attack on another nation. It would not be consistent with
what we have been as a nation or what we should be as a nation."

As right wing hawks in the Bush administration continue their rush
to America's next war, several top ranking Republicans have stepped
forward to voice their opposition to an unprovoked attack against
Iraq. While some of their arguments may ruffle the feathers on longtime
peace activists, these current
and former officials offer a myriad of reasons for President
to Bush to re-evaluate his preference for a military conflict with
Iraq.
US Assisted Iraq
Despite Use of Poison Gas
U.S officials in the Reagan administration knew that Iraqi forces
were routinely using chemical weapons in the war against Iran, but
the administration continued its
covert program providing Iraq with tactical advice and intelligence.
Former Clinton Official
Opposes Attacking Iraq
Leon Fuerth, longtime advisor to Vice President Al Gore on National
Security wrote recently in the New York Times that "eliminating
Mr. Hussein's regime will not solve the terrorism problem as exemplified
by Al Qaeda and waging war against Iraq could create new threats.
Peace Action Opposes
Economic Sanctions on Iraq
After Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the United Nations, acting
under US pressure, imposed stiff economic sanctions on Iraq intended
to pressure Iraq to stop manufacturing weapons of mass destruction.
ave remained in effect ever since and have exacted a staggering
toll on Iraqi civilians.
While it may seem ironic that an organization as committed to disarmament
as Peace Action would oppose sanctions intended to limit Iraq's
capability to build weapons of mass destruction, a closer examination
shows that the sanctions themselves are being used as a weapon of
mass destruction. This is something Peace Action cannot support.
