We
are united in our sorrow and shock at the September 11 attack
upon our city. Living the the shadow of this tragedy,
we wish to affirm our sense of community, our desire for justice
and our renewed appreciation of the value of human life. In
one terrible moment of violence we have experienced what happens
when those bent on vengeance target innocent civilians. From
this tragedy we are determined to build an even better New
York and a safer world.
We therefore pledge:
To aid the families of firefighters, police, rescue
workers and the many thousands who were killed or injured
in the explosions,
To support effective efforts under international
law to identify, capture and try the perpetrators of this
horrific crime.
To protect the lives of innocent civilians in all
countries, who must not be made the next victims of another
indiscriminate assault from the sky or ground.
To defend our civil liberties and safeguard the distinctive
values of a free, democratic society.
To insure that our rebuilding efforts include all
the residents of our city, especially those who are poor and
have scant resources to cope with additional hardship.
To preserve the safety of our communities, where Muslims,
Jews, Christians and people of diverse beliefs and ethnicity
have lived together harmoniously.
Inspired by the love and heroism of so many of our fellow
citizens, we seek to halt the warand promote peace.
