The White House is preparing to expand its open-ended war
from Afghanistan to other countries including possibly Iraq
and Somalia. More innocent civilians will meet their deaths because
of American bombs, more American service men and women will be
put at risk, and the United States will continue to sow resentment
and instability around the world.
President Bush continues to walk away from key arms control
treaties in his quixotic pursuit of a Star
Wars missile defense scheme that remains unproven, inadequately
tested, will certainly cost untold billions of your tax dollars,
and, as September 11 made all too clear, will do little to protect
Americans against the real threats we face.
The Pentagon is pushing for massive increases in military spending
despite the fact that it just received what the New York Times
called the largest military spending increase since the Reagan
years. Meanwhile, the Pentagon budget remains littered with pork
barrel pet projects and waste and officials are scrambling to
find scarce dollars for health care, education, security, and
infrastructure.
The Bush administration is quietly laying the groundwork to
resume blowing up nuclear bombs under the Nevada Dessert despite
the U.S. signature on a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty which bars
such nuclear explosions and has been signed by over 140 countries
including Russia and China.
Peace Action of New York State will continue its efforts to promote
peaceful solutions to conflicts and to ensure that hard fought battles
such as the nuclear test ban are not suddenly reversed.
